Re-Release Confirmed out in the Fall

    Tuesday, July 27th, 2010

The Demolition Crew are working hard remixing 11 tracks from Alexz’s debut release, Voodoo. Demolition tweeted saying that the re-release of Voodoo will be out in the fall. This comes as no surprise since Alexz recently reviled in a recent interview, a release in September (Alexz Gets a Make Over from LiveDress.com).

A September release seems a bit to soon though. I wouldn’t expect a release until October or November. A single will definitely precede the re-release according to manager, Stephen Stohn.

Alexz is already planning music video ideas for her next single, rumored to be “Voodoo”. “Thinking of music video ideas for my next single.. I love this part…” she said in a recent tweet.

New Info From Drake Hotel Performance

    Thursday, July 15th, 2010

Kittens_33 announced on the forum, Dirty Little Secrets that Alexz said “that the single will be out in September and that she’s been writing a bunch of new songs.” She then asked when a new record would be out and a stunned Alexz replied it “will be out and she said next summer!

“The crazy thing is that I got there really early so my mom and I went to eat and Alexz and her band walked by and Alexz was singing! It was so surreal.” – Kittens33

Setlist (not in the order played):
Voodoo (probably going to be the single)
    Taker
    A Little Bit
    L.A. Made Me
    Mary
    I Just Wanted Your Love
    Running With The Devil
    Chicago
    Boogie Love

Her review of some of the songs performed:

Boogie Love was fun live. She changed one of the first lines to something about disco. I think the drunk people (and there were a lot of them) liked it. Alexz was laughing during it.
Omg, I forgot that she played I Just Wanted Your Love too! She was saying how she always felt weird giving it away to Instant Star, so now she gets to play it live. It was probably the most well known song.
Taker was a smudge slower in tempo. The part where she’s singing ‘it didn’t mean anything’ until the end was beautiful.
RWTD was sung super duper fast, but the vocals were flawless.
Chicago is so different live without all the bells and whistles. More of an exposed version.

Thanks Kittens_33 for sharing the info!

    Voodoo Re-Release This Fall?

    Sunday, July 11th, 2010

In March, Alexz released her debut album, Voodoo. Voodoo charted well its debut month, frequenting the top 50 albums on iTunes and even higher on Amazon.ca charts.

However, the album has not been as successful with the industry. Trip gets rare radio play. But, Alexz is a fighter and wants to reach her music to everyone. In March, shortly after Voodoo’s release, a Trip Around the World remix was announced and more recently more information was released.

Alexz sent out an exclusive email to her fans this morning stating that an entire remixed Voodoo album would be released this fall with a brand new radio single. The album is being produced by no other than Demo Castellon (who attended her NXNE show with wife Nelly Furtado).

This is NOT a dance remix as many think, these are songs reworked to be more friendly with the masses and radio play. If you listen to Taylor Swift and then hear her on Top 40 stations, the country is replaced with pop. Its similar to that.

Alexz also promised that “slot more will be happening over the next few weeks”!

Alexz Johnson at the House of Nonie Fashion Show

    Friday, July 2nd, 2010

Our own Katie Gilmour wrote a review for Alexz’s most recent appearance, hosting and being hte mc at the House of Nonie Fashion show, where models strut down the aisle to Alexz’s songs. Make sure to read Katie’s review below!

Yesterday, June 29th, Alexz Johnson hosted and MC’d the House of Nonie Fashion show. To be honest, I didn’t think I would be able to attend. I had just moved, and there was so much to do that I didn’t think I would be able to make it. I hadn’t even planned on going until the day before the show. But I knew Alexz would be there, and I really wanted to go.

On the day of the show, my brother and I drove about an hour and a half, and met up with some friends at Lobby in Toronto. We were running really late, but luckily, the show didn’t start until about eight.

We were all sitting around, just chatting and passing time, when all of a sudden a voice came out of the speakers. It was Alexz, and the show was beginning. We all stood up and Alexz talked briefly about the designer Nina Rahal-Kharey and her clothing line that was being showed that night. She talked about how Nina’s brother had been killed due to violence and how the line was named after him– JR. After she finished talking, all of a sudden, loud music blasted out of the speakers. The song was Trip Around the World.

Watching all the models walking to Alexz’s music was so cool. The crazy thing about the fashion show was that all the models walked on the bar, which had been converted into a runway. The first song was Trip, which led into Voodoo, then La Made Me. I looked over at Alexz at one point and she looked so happy, and had a smile on her face.

All of the dresses were beautiful! Nina has an amazing talent and I was blown away at all the different designs. At the end, Nina came out to say her thank yous. Nina was standing on the bar, but Alexz was standing on the floor at the same height as the audience. Watching Alexz climb up onto the bar while wearing a long skirt was pretty funny. But she made it up quickly, and actually very gracefully! Alexz and Nina stood on the bar and Nina took the time to recognize everyone that had contributed to the show. It was really nice to see two amazing people that were so genuine and humble.

After finishing, Alexz and Nina walked to the end of the bar and down a few stairs and went backstage. Alexz came out quickly, and I got to be the first one to talk to her.

Once again, Alexz was so genuine and had a big smile during the entire conversation. She signed my Voodoo CD for me, and a picture from when I met her the first time at the Rivoli. I told her that we had met at the Rivoli, and that I had written her a letter, and she actually remembered who I was. We talked for a few minutes about the album and about what her plans are in the future. Eventually Alexz had to go and see some people, but she gave me a hug before she left. I also got a picture with her, but unfortunately it didn’t turn out very well.

The group I was with ended up leaving shorty after, but It was an amazing night. We got dinner, then headed home, myself on an Alexz high, haha.

It never ceases to amaze me how talented Alexz is, but how she stays so down to earth. I don’t think she has the slightest inkling of exactly how much her and her music means to myself and so many others.

Alexz, if you read this, thanks for everything you do! There’s really so much I want to say, but don’t know how to find the words. It really means the world that you share your music with us. The way you write and perform is absolutely inspiring, and I know that I would’ve never gotten into songwriting and playing guitar if it weren’t for you. Your fearlessness and how you can pick back up and start from scratch after losing your music really shows us what strength and perseverance really is. Please continue to make music and share your soul with us. We as fans, will always back you up and support you and your passion.

Thanks to Alanna and InDiscover for giving me the opportunity to share my experience with you guys!

Alexz announced via twitter that hip hop producer, Demo Castellon is the producer for her upcoming radio remix tracks.

Due to the lack of radio play “Trip Around the World” has been getting, Alexz announced plans to remix various Voodoo tracks for a more radio friendly sound.

Castellon has worked with the likes of Wyclef Jean, Jay-Z, Ludacris, Rihanna, Fergie and even wife, Nelly Furtado.

Both Castellon and Furtado were guests at Alexz’s latest show at the Gladstone Hotel on June 19th.

The Highs & The Lows – Alexz’s Latest Email

    Sunday, June 6th, 2010

Alexz sent out an email to her fans, you can read it below if you have yet to check your email or have yet to sign up for email updates!

I want to say thanks Alexz for letting us know what’s been going on, we’ve been really hungry for new info!

I wanted to give you an update on what’s been happening.

It’s been really tough getting Trip played on the radio, and I’m not going to pretend I know exactly what makes a song radio-friendly. The thing is, if I wrote music thinking that radio play was the most important thing I wouldn’t be writing it from a place of truth… And the truth is, my favourite albums aren’t even played on the radio these days.

Yet, to get on a big tour, and to get the music out there, it seems to be an important stepping stone to get on radio. Especially since music is my passion, I know I can be a little stubborn when it comes to staying true to your vision and sound, and I know I’ll always be that way… but I also know the industry changes so fast and to keep connected and engaged sometimes you have to bite the bullet, in a way. (By the way, those aren’t my words, they’re people in my life I trust to help steer me when my vision gets blurry. I never saw the day I would have a twitter account… ) But, I do get it.

To me, it’s always been solely about the music. And, it can still be solely about the music – it’s just finding a way that works to share it with as many people as possible.

That being said – the album is finished and represents everything Brendan and I wanted it to. The idea of doing a radio remix of Trip was mentioned–and maybe some other tracks as well–and I actually like the idea.

I like it because Trip and maybe others will have potential to get broad airplay, and if people can get a feel for it, and if they enjoy it (the clever ones, fingers crossed ;)), then hopefully they’ll be drawn to the album.

Our goal was to make a cohesive album where every song brought you into the next… Trip feels like a sneak preview to me.

I’m really excited for a couple of cool shows coming up this summer. I feel like it’s baby steps, and important ones to make.

I want so badly to be playing all over the world for you guys. It is my intention to do so.. I’m going to bat and I’m playing ball for you. Well, with you!

While Trip’s getting a make-over, I’m already looking forward to a second single. Actually, I’m already looking forward to the next 10 albums. Growing in general is a pretty awesome thing and something I’m thankful for everyday!

Thanks for your support during this wonderful, musical journey. The highest highs and the painful lows, it’s all meant to be.

    x

    CP24 Interview

    Saturday, May 8th, 2010

The CP24 crew in Toronto interviews Alexz Johnson about her debut album “Voodoo” on April 8, 2010.

Valley Scene Magazine Review of Voodoo

    Wednesday, May 5th, 2010

    Alexz Johnson
    By Kenyth Mogan

Amongst the over synthesized, over produced sensations whose vocals have been auto-tuned to robotic perfection, Alexz Johnson is a rare gem. The multi talented Johnson, is an actress and singer-songwriter hailing from British Columbia. She first appeared in the Disney Channel original series “So Weird” with Mackenzie Philips and in 2008 wrapped taping on the Gemi Award winning “Instant Star” which she portrayed the main character of Jude Harrison for four consecutive seasons. Johnson also appeared on all five show’s soundtracks, including a ‘Greatest Hits’ album.

Now, Johnson returns with what is technically her debut album, “Voodoo”. Released independently through inDiscover Recordings, a subsidiary of Universal Music’s Orange Lounge Recordings, the album is a blend of contemporary pop and that of the 50s/60s rock era. Johnson’s voice is smooth, passionate and her lyrics, which were co-written with her brother, Brendan James Johnson (who also produced the album) are fun, insightful, and well composed. Johnson, though beautiful, relies not on sex and shock value to sell her record, but talent.

The album’s first single “Trip Around The World” was released February 2nd and is also available on her website www.alexzjohnson.com as a free download. The album packaging is just as impressive as the contents itself as it is styled like a poster from a 50s film. Johnson states that she and her Brother have a love of film music, and that each song is almost like their own scene.

The albums opening (and title track) “Voodoo” with a strong beat and seductive lyrics, the Johnson’s have you immediately immersed in the cinematic world that they have created, which does not stop until the album’s fun and funky finally, “Boogie Love”. Point blank, if you’re looking for an instant gratification stick with artist like Ke$ha and Lady Gaga, but if you’re looking for music that has stamina, you can purchase “Voodoo” from Johnson’s website, CDbaby, and Itunes.”
