    Flashback Week: Day 5

    Wednesday, January 6th, 2010

Today’s songs are all from Instant Star. Instead of just choosing one, we chose a few from Alexz’s time on the show. I didn’t want to dedicate more than one day to Instant Star, even though most of the songs we have from Alexz are from the show.

The first song is called “24 Hours”, I don’t think it needs much of an introduction. It was used as Instant Star’s first single and made Alexz a bit more known throughout the US and Canada, which is why it’s the first flashback song.

Next is a little song that became an instant sensation on Youtube, used for several fan made videos for Jommy lovers and haters, and even used for other fan made videos of other series pairings. Alexz took the stage in Instant Star, supposed to be performing a song called “Your Eyes”, but instead plays another song. A song about her father cheating on her mother. The song touched so many fans in so many ways, so much emotion is drawn from inside when you listen to it. Well, that song is “Skin”.

This next song is called “I Don’t Know If I Should Stay”, a beautiful ballad with strong lead vocals and a beautiful piano in the background. The song is slow for about 2 minutes and then bam! It’s like a new song starts.

In the fourth and final season of Instant Star Jude sort of gifts this song to Tommy Quincy. This is a different version from the one that The N had posted in 2008. This popped up on Myspace last year and is called “I Still Love You”.

Sorry I posted this kinda late, tomorrow’s will be up earlier in the day!

    Flashback Week: Day 4

    Monday, January 4th, 2010

Shortly before Alexz began working on her television series, she worked on a project for Fill Your Head Music, an education company focusing in helping student. Promising “a vocabulary-building CD that features current trends in popular music! Young people will clammor for the cool raps and songs in this collection of songs that define and promote practice with over 200 S.A.T. and A.C.T. words.”

The song Johnson wrote and recorded for the project was “Transparent Lies”, using words like furtive, insinuation, tarnish, and disparage to tell the familiar tale of how lies, no matter how small and transparent turn into more lies and hurt more and more.

“Transparent Lies” is our Flashback Week: Day 4 song, because of how strong the song is. How easily anyone can relate to it. Everyone’s been lied to, everyone’s lied. Everyone’s told a “transparent lie” that has ended up being more opaque than intended.

Buy the Fill Your Head Music CD with “Transparent Lies” now!

    Flashback Week: Day 3

    Sunday, January 3rd, 2010

From 2001-2003 Alexz began working with producer CJ Vanston after her management contacted CJ, around same time she began working on So Weird. Alexz and her brother, Brendon worked on a bunch of new demos (“My First In Love”, “Nothings Gonna Touch My Heart”, and “Stop the World” to name a few). One of which, “Don’t Pull off My Wings” was recorded in the April of 2002. This song is our Day 3 Flashback Week song.

    Don’t Pull Off My Wings

Song removed, listen to it via CJVanston.com

Why? Easy, the song showcased Alexz’s new sound; a more mature voice and deeper lyrics. Alexz finally ditched the commercial bubble gum pop sound that was so catchy in the early 2000′s.

In “Don’t Pull off My Wings” Alexz sings about how someone should embrace their feelings, let love happen; a huge step away from “To Dream About You” (written in 2000/2001), the epitome of bubblegum pop.

Hope you all enjoy today’s song and look forward to tomorrow’s!

    Flashback Week: Day 2

    Saturday, January 2nd, 2010

Today’s song was recorded in 2003 or 2004, but was the first song Alexz remembers writing. There’s so many ways to look at the song, but in the end it all goes back to having someone there, that “you are not alone”. If you haven’t heard the song, I really recommend you listen to it now…

    The song is “Running Back”.

    Flashback Week: Day 1

    Friday, January 1st, 2010

To introduce 2010, we’re posting a song each day for an entire week from the past decade. Each day we will post a new song from Alexz’s past, which we think were her best. This all starts today and will end next Friday. So let’s get started!

I was really torn from two songs that Alexz did in 2001. One she wrote and the other she performed so graciously… Therefor, I am posting both!

This song appeared in 2001 on Zoog Disney’s hit show, So Weird, where Alexz replaced Cara DeLizia’s character, Fi, in the third season as Annie Thelen. Towards the end of the season Alexz’s character discovers that someone’s watching over her, she has her own guardian angel.

This song is appropriately titled “Cause You’re Watching Over Me”.

Next is a song that Alexz wrotean episode in which she performed during Carnival in So Weird. Throughout the episode she tries to save her family and friends from turning into carnies! The song is “To Dream About You”.

    Here’s an HQ Episode Rip:

And an LQ demo version of it:
