    Alexz Plays NXNE (June 19th)

    Tuesday, June 22nd, 2010

Foot-tapping, hip-swaying and singing-along filled the Gladstone on Saturday.

This past weekend, Alexz Johnson took part in the 2010 NXNE Festival, playing at The Gladstone Hotel alongside acts such as Maurice, Alex Lacasse, Dylan Murray and The Zolas.

She was warmly welcomed by the crowd, which was filled with both fans and music industry executives. Dressed in a yellow summer coat and flashing her million dollar smile, Alexz played nothing short of an amazing set.

Amongst her tunes were LA Made Me,Voodoo and Superstition off her recent debut album ‘Voodoo’.

She also treated the audience to a new song called Mary, which was accompanied by guitar. Unfortunately, due to time constraints, Trip Around the World and A Little Bit couldn’t be performed, much to Alexz’s disappointment.

I did attend Alexz’s performance at the Rivoli. I was very excited to attend this live show. I think her performance was fantastic. Her vocals was excellent and she sang her heart out. She was very friendly with her fans and allowed them to take pictures with her. I did get the opportunity to take a pic with her but I missed the autograph opportunity after her performance. There was a good sized crowd to see her and the other performers. I think the Rivoli was the perfect venue because everyone get to see her up close. Everyone seemed to enjoy the show including myself. I did take some pics and some videos of the performance. It was a day I’ll never forget. I hope she does a tour soon, so that everyone has the opportunity to see her live!

Alexz did mention that fans at the Rivoli are the first ones to see her sing live from her debut album. I was in the front row and it was standing room but there are seats available on both sides. I was captivated by her performance. Words couldn’t describe how happy and excited I was about her performance. She sang 6 songs – Voodoo, LA made me, A little bit, Hurricane girl, superstition, and Trip around the world. I wished she sang more songs, the show seem to be over quickly, probably I was too excited and busy taking pics and videos. I did miss the opportunity to get her autograph after the show since she was signing at the walkway outside the room where the stage is. I didn’t realize that she was there signing. : ( It’s hard to find any of old Instant Star albums and Dvd’s in Canada, they are not plentiful. I think people who weren’t fans became fans after the show. My buddy who didn’t know who she is became a fan.

I can’t even describe the feeling [of meeting Alexz]. It was like a rush of emotions all at once. Excitement, shock, fear, nervousness, and so much else. I met her before and got pictures, then she performed. Then I met her and got autographs, gave her my letter, and then met Brendan. before I left I got a hug from both of them. Meeting Brendan was so cool! I thought he was going to be very quiet, but he was actually very cool and energetic. We got to talk for a minute and he gave me a lot of cool advice on guitar and songwriting. He was very gracious when I complimented him. I didn’t [sing along] for the most part. I knew the words, but I was recording a lot of it and it wouldn’t record Alexz’s voice as much as mine if I was singing. Believe me, that’s a good thing! For a couple of songs like A Little Bit I danced, clapped and sung, but I spent most of the time smiling and taking it all in. So hard to choose [a favorite]. They were all so incredible. I guess I’d say Superstition because of the sound that was created and the emotion and passion she put into each note.

Meeting Stephen was amazing. He was everything he came across as in his tweets and emails. I’d waited for the right moment to introduce myself and he told me he had been worried about was about to try and contact me. It was lovely that he was concerned and thinking about me. He was wonderful to talk to, and made sure that he introduced me to Alexz. He even took pictures for us! Afterwards we were talking via text and he told me that he was glad I could come share the experience. There are only a few people that are nicer than Stephen.

Two words to describe the night: Perfect. and Magic.

    SAF Information

    Saturday, December 27th, 2008

Alexz Johnson is one of our very own B.C. girls. She has been performing since age 7, receiving huge recognition, with her beautiful voice. Perhaps you would remember her as the 10 year old anthem girl singing live for the NHL, or as the lead of one of her tv shows, such as CTV’s “Instant Star”, where she was just honored with a Gemini award. Since her series has wrapped, Alexz has had more time to focus on her music and songwriting with her brother Brendan Johnson. This year, Alexz received an International recording contract with Sony/Epic Records, and an album due to be launched this spring. Tonight, Alexz and Brendan are thrilled to share with you a couple of their songs that will be on their debut album.

Superwomen and Friends – Red Carpet Gala

    Wednesday, December 3rd, 2008

    Vuew Full Image

In November, I had the opportunity to attend the first ever “SuperWomen & Friends”, a red carpet gala fundraiser at Four Seasons Hotel put on by the Women In Leadership Foundation.  Founded in 2001 by Maya Kanigan, WIL has invested over $1.7 million into showcasing female role models and recognizing the accomplishments of Canadian business women.  In her tearful opening speech, Maya spoke of how she dreamed of bringing women together to share their successes. Most notably, through their six-month mentorship program, young women are paired with business-minded female professionals to share wisdom and gain support on how to be a successful leader and contribute to the overall goal of achieving more female leaders in society.

Keynote speakers for the evening included Melanie Berry, president of the Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (think: JUNO Awards!) and the upbeat and lively Rena Heer of CTV news.  Both speakers touched on the disproportionate ratio of women in management roles and praised the efforts of WIL in contributing to a worthwhile cause.

Other entertainment for the evening included a live auction with high-end items including jewelry from Tiffany & Co., a CTV VIP tour, dream makeovers and getaway packages. Similarly, outside the main dining hall was an extensive display of silent auction items.  From Canuck game tickets, Muzi Tea, Urban Fare gift baskets, and clothing and accessory items from Boudoir, Jolie Mack and The Urban Rack.

Towards the end of the dinner, more entertainment came with a full fashion show from JC Studio.  Nine models dressed in fabulously colorful pieces graced the runway, which started with stylish corporate day-wear.  The show climaxed to an incredible finish with each model clothed in glamorous but classy full length gowns in this season’s ever-so-popular popular brightly-colored jewel tones and poised strikingly in a picture-perfect poses back at the beginning of the runway.

Lastly, the SuperWomen & Friends gala also featured a special music performance by Alexz Johnson and Stephen Spender.  If Alexz’s name sounds familiar to you, it could be because she has been singing since the age of 7 and was the 10-year-old anthem girl singing live for the NHL.  Or maybe it was from CTV’s “Instant Star” where she was recently honored with a Gemini award.

All in all, it was a fancy charity gala, packed with hours of non-stop entertainment.  I was glad I had the opportunity to hear more about the initiatives of WIL and I would encourage you to check out their website for more information!  Until next year…!
